  • About the lab: The Autonomous Systems Lab (ASL) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (香港理工大學自主系統實驗室) is directed by Dr. Yuxiang Sun (Chinese Name: 孫宇翔). The lab studies AI-powered robotics and autonomous systems, with a focus on autonomous driving and mobile robots. Our mission is to create reliable and state-of-the-art perception, planning and control systems that can navigate autonomous vehicles in real complex environments at a large scale. The lab currently has 1 Postdoctoral Research Fellow, 9 Ph.D students, 1 Research Assistant, 2 Master students, and 5 Undergraduate students. Dr. Sun is particularly proud of the achievements of his students. Two PhD students successfully won the highly-competitive Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) award in the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic year. Three PhD students successfully won the prestigious PolyU Presidential PhD Fellowship Scheme award in the 2021/2022 academic year. The lab has been sponsored by various funding bodies with a total amount over HK$10 millions (including equivalent RMB) since its establishment in 2020. Our sponsors are the National Natural Science Foundation of China (国家自然科学基金委员会), Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission (香港創新科技署), University Grants Committee (大學教育資助委員會), Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province (广东省科学技术厅), and world-leading AI companies, such as Huawei (華為) and Baidu (百度), etc.

    Short biography of the PI: Dr. Yuxiang Sun joined The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as a faculty member in 2020. In April 2022, Dr. Sun was selected as one of the Top 50 Global AI Chinese Young Scholars in the interdisciplinary fields of AI, AI华人青年学者榜, by Baidu. Dr. Sun serves as an Associate Editor of the top-tier robotics journal and conferences: IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (RA-L), IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) and IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS). Dr. Sun has authored or co-authored more than 55 peer-reviewed research papers, most of which were published in prestigious journals and conferences. He has two RA-L papers that were selected as the Popular Articles in this journal, and two Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) papers that were selected as the Most Cited Articles in this journal. One RAS paper ranked No. 1 in the most cited articles of 2020, and the other one ranked No. 2 in the most cited articles of 2021. Dr. Sun received the Best Paper in Robotics award at the IEEE-ROBIO 2019 conference, and the Best Student Paper Finalist award at the IEEE-ROBIO 2015 conference.

  • 01/2022: Dr. Sun was appointed as an Associate Editor of IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS).

  • 11/2021: A General Research Fund project of Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong (广东省自然科学基金面上项目) was successfully approved. The success rate is 24.96%.
